About
Dr. Fernando is a Senior Research Fellow at the Keio-NUS CUTE Center, National University of Singapore where he works as a multidisciplinary researcher, educator, and students’ supervisor. In 2008, he completed a term of six months as a Visiting Research Fellow (Post-Doc) at the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies of Kyoto University. He has published his works in highly competitive Journals (MIT Press’ journal “Presence,” Oxford Press’ journal “IEICE Trans. Inf. & Syst.,” and “IEEE Trans. Syst. Man and Cybern.”) and prestigious conferences (ACM DIS, IEEE ISMAR, and ACM SIGGRAPH). Altogether, there are two (2) patents (pending), eight (08) book chapters, twenty two (22) journal papers, and over sixty (60) papers in refereed conferences. His research has also been received several international awards, including Nokia UbiMedia MindTrek and Laval Virtual Revolution. Some of his research achievements received considerable press and media attention as well as attention from venture capitalists. For instance, “Petimo: Safe Social Networking Robot for Children” was broadcast on Science Channel in USA and on Discovery Channel worldwide. He has also been awarded with several highly competitive scholarships, including the prestigious Japanese Government (MEXT: Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.
He was an invited reviewer for several conferences and journals, including IEEE VR, ACE, ICEC, MobileHCI, ACM CiE, IJCiNi, and AHCI (Issue on Interactive Play and Learning for Children). He served as a program committee member for several conferences, including IEEE VR, ACE, ICEC, etc. He is a guest editor for AHCI journal and Associate Editor for ACM CiE. During his higher studies at the University of Aizu, he was engaged as a Teaching Assistant for the “Programming III,” “Advanced Algorithms,” “Discrete Systems,” and “Spatial Sound and Auditory Interfaces” undergraduate courses and the “Computer Music” and “Acoustic Modeling” graduate courses. He is currently an associate faculty at SIM University (Singapore) where he teaches “Computer Interactive Graphics” and “Virtual Reality Systems.” He is also teaching “Software Engineering” course for the Bachelor of Technology Programme at NUS.
